I launched WORDY BIRD five days ago, full of excitement and trepidation: No matter how long you’ve been writing, each time you venture out into the world with something to say, you experience a jolt of nerves. In a way, writing on Substack raises the stakes a bit higher than they might otherwise be. When I write a story for a magazine, I know that most readers will come across it in the course of their regular reading. I don’t have to “sell” the story to them; there’s no sense of vulnerability when I put a piece in The New Yorker. But publishing a newsletter is more like publishing a book: The readers vote.
