Many years ago, I was offered one of those irresistible magazine assignments that involved staying at several fancy hotels and writing little squibs about the experiences. This was an easy yes—can you blame me?—spoken before I even knew which fancy hotels it involved. It turns out that two were in New York (The Pierre and the Waldorf-Astoria) and the third was a newly renovated joint in Palm Beach known as Mar-a-Lago.
