Ooh. I will watch the new Little Drummer Girl if you will watch the old. It is SO good (as is the novel from where it all originated). Re flouring chicken, use the true-confessions-of-a-chef method and dump everything into a large ziplock bag and then shake.

Brilliant! I forgot the ziplock trick!

Tumeric! So funny! I was never a nail person. I did do my toes for a few years when I was younger, pearly pink. They looked pretty in the summer. In the winter, I didn't do them. Now I have arthritis and bunions so I keep attention away from my nails as much as possible!

You look so happy with your chickens. I also follow Joyce Vance, who has chickens, too. You seem to both get a similar joy from your chickens that’s lovely to behold, that I’ll never experience. I have a terrible phobia of birds, and could never bear the thought of touching one. I’m particularly mortified by the sight of a dead bird—I feel like I have a mini heart attack when I see one. The chickens seem to be quite friendly and even cuddly from what I’ve observed on Joyce’s Substack—reminding me of my cat and dog (I love all other animals, including lizards, snakes, and insects—go figure). Anyway, you just look so happy and beautiful and even proud, surrounded by your poultry friends—something I’ll sadly never experience :(

Ditto. Chickens looking for attention are particularly scary, pecking at and around one's feet. Ick!

Loved this one… ❤️❤️❤️

Your Rin-Tin-Tin book was what first pulled my attention your way and you have not disappointed yet. Happy 4th!

A little tip for coating chicken or any meat pieces, I use a fairly large plastic bag and throw the pieces around in the bag.

Susan! If you're still warm to the nude-ish nail look, I want to introduce you to these LONDONTOWN nail concealers and strengtheners. They're all I use now b/c they're totally goof-proof, dry super fast, and they even have one that is like a "nail blush" that might go along with your red spice theory...

Ok, this sounds like exactly what I want!!!!!

Abe and I even made a little video a while back so you can see how it looks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKcpUOxbyRs

If you can find it, there's a documentary of sorts called "Our World War" which was briefly on Netflix, but no longer is. (Originally a BBC production I believe.) Only three hour-long episodes. The filmmakers used letters home from the front as the basis for each episode, focusing on a different battle/area in Europe; the episodes were dramatic pieces, illustrating the events described in the letters. Lots of latter-day film techniques to heighten the impact on contemporary viewers. Highly recommended!

Thanks for the Show Notes nods--all seem right up my alley...And it's funny--I went through a period of disavowing all those beauty rituals that I felt were somehow "mandated" (they really were not)--and have now reintroduced several of them. Including the nail thing. I spend so much time at the keyboard, seeing my nails click happily along makes me happy. (Plus, the process used lasts 4 weeks with no chipping...otherwise, that would be a big, fat NO.)

Anything involving fingernails for me is hopeless -- mine are brittle, refuse to grow nicely -- my aunt told me it's a family, i.e., genetic thing, none of us has ever been able to have nice fingernails.

As for dredging chicken, I long ago read a hint that really works -- put the flour, breadcrumbs, whatever in a plastic bag, add chicken, and shake the bag. Chicken gets nice and fully covered and hands stay clean (if you use tongs to take the chicken out of the bag.) But no spice-dye nails that way.

I don’t do anything to my fingernails but file them. I do paint my toenails.

I always say I consider my hands tools — they need to be able to type, wash dishes, scrub a floor, make chicken, whatever.

Of course I raised a daughter so into having perfect nails that she essentially set up her own nail bar in her basement. She can do anything a professional nail tech can.

I suggested she should do clients’ nails while she counsels them. Make it a two-fer.

There are some great podcast series on World War I on The Rest Is History. Sometimes I find it really feeds learning when you consume the information in different mediums.

I like the manicure tip since I always feel like an imposter when I've had a manicure, and it's weird to have a pedicure when the sandals are always Birkenstocks. But I do it once a year, and it lasts -- navy blue or silver -- mostly navy blue. The fingers are a lost cause; the cuticles have a life of their own.

Paprika. Not chili. Please, not chili. My cuticles began bleeding in sympathy at the thought.

Ha! Good suggestion!!

Netflix dropped "Long Road to War"; Amazon Prime picked it up. Bad news for me — I'm in my second year of an all-things-Amazon boycott.

Susan Orlean's avatar

Ah, too bad. It’s so well done.

Couldn’t find The Long Road to War on Netflix? But my library does have the Pat Barker trilogy available on Kindle and can borrow right away! YAY
