Thank you! I don't feel so neurotic! I'm just in midst of fretting over my new grey hangers and the even newer Joy black velvets. How could I have messed up the colours!
I am giddy about this post!!! I am stuck right now with mismatching velvet hangers and wooden for my husband. I think this might be my answer to gaining more room and having nice looking hangers that match. THANK YOU!!!!
Another great post. I’m an all plastic ‘cut crystal’ hanger user myself. I wanted to say that I subscribed to your Substack last week when I was in Mexico thinking it cost $105 US dollars monthly. That’s how much I wanted to read about Velvet in Winter Eyelet in Summer - I complained but subscribed. Relieved to realize a week later that was $105MX but still.
I worked back of the house support staff at a resort hotel for a few years. In the off season when there was no one around winter afternoons, I would purloin new wooden hangers by the dozen from the huge cartons of Housekeeping’s stock. My wife was grateful; the uniformity of our closets is visually pleasing. Couldn't beat the price.
Joseph Mitchell. I used to hand his stories out to my smartest students, the most restless ones. I'll never forget one young man who told me, "He's pretty good." He meant it, and what a gas to think that he'd found something smart enough to get his attention.
Ugh, I just replaced ALL of mine with new velvets, drat. Putting a pin in MAWA for (admittedly weird) Christmas gifts! Love and identify with this post!
I’m still using the black velvet. How did you discover the Mawa? Are you a total convert now? Another thing to prevent me from sleeping. Fun fact: I cast “Mommie Dearest” xoxox
Fun fact about “mommie dearest”. when we began casting, Anne Bancroft was attached to play Joan Crawford but she dropped out. Faye Dunaway replaced her.
I think it must be a female thing more than male, wanting uniformity in our dressing rooms or wardrobes. I started off with all white thick plastic hangers which have been fine, but having the thin black velvets are preferable giving more room, and as you said, nothing falls off them. But with both of the former, should you hang knitwear you end up with points in the shoulders which have to be ironed out. That is why with some of my heavier jumpers they go on wooden suit coat hangers, of course they take up a major amount of room, but fortunately for me I have a dressing room and two other spare rooms to put my clothes. The latest hangers you have found would be a boon for knitwear I’m sure. My sister has her entire wardrobe filled with thin plastic covered hangers, for me I don’t like the fact they leave a mark across the legs of slacks and points in tops. Anyway, thank you for another great read, as others have said, quite amusing, good for a relaxing Sunday afternoon read.
I laughed my way through this entire article. I am sure we must be related by DNA. I have 4 types I use. Velvet Closed Hangars (I don't like the open ones because they tangle up too much): to be used for anything that would otherwise fall of the hanger, but not pants because they leave a fold mark. Dry-cleaner cardboard tube hangers for MY pants because they stay put and don't leave a fold mark. Nice, plastic, "crystal" hangers with swivel heads for everything that is a top (that wouldn't otherwise fall off, see: velvet hangers). Tube hangers (all one size only) for most of my husband's larger things, they just fit better. I toss anything else. Especially those wire only dry cleaner hangers which I despise.
Nice "You might find it by colorizing your books or alphabetizing your spices or using your label maker on every known surface." To each his own, just hang tight :)
Misery loved company - I've spent an inordinate amount of money on hangers. And now I'm going to spend even more! The velvet hangers aren't cutting it and I want the Mawas.

Well, I'm very flattered you would have forked over $105 US! Thank you!!
Ooh the Mawas come in RED

If it isn’t a slim black velvet hanger it isn’t going in my closet. Rules are rules.

Adore yr writing — I’m a velvet girl but I’m intrigued

Total convert, although I keep some velvet ones for sweaters, etc. I didn’t know you cast Mommy!!!!!!!!!

OMG, it became such an iconic role for her!
This is writing skill! An INTERESTING and ENTERTAINING acount of clothes hangers. My own collection is that scruffy and random one.

The velvets are my fave. I envy your ultra-slims! What a delightful read, haha. Hangers. Who'da thunk it? Love!
