Broke my wrist when I was 61, and several friends over 60 have injured something - I kinda feel like there should be a big “Welcome to your 60s” packet, with hints on how to stop multitasking and best ways to approach stairs, uneven sidewalks etc with great focus and care; maybe throw in some nice treats & safe sneakers…
I am so sorry this happened but you are not whining. Or if you are it is highly pleasurable whining. I hope that you can quell your boredom by writing more updates like these.
So sorry! I broke my foot tripping on a step earlier this year, and my biggest piece of advice is to get yourself an Evenup shoe balancer from Amazon for your other foot, so your booted foot and your other foot are the same height off the ground, otherwise you can a lot of shooting pain in your other leg (I learned the hard way).
Bummer about the ankle and cancelled mom-son road trip. Make sure and reschedule, even if it happens after Tulane graduation, as was case w/ my son. Speaking of New Orleans and sons, you'll have a blast going there with or without the boot (which can be turned into a German beer mug, I am told), doing all sorts of writer-mom-visiting-son stuff. (Field trip to District Donuts a must. Say you are doing research). Can't say you'll get much "actual" writing done...I never did, but it was fun pretending to be writing in that most literary of cities. And you can wear your shorts---or not.
Yikes! Thanks for sharing (not whining!) I too hope you heal fully and quickly! Will be sending good mojo...
And thanks for mentioning your line a day practice! I'm on my second book, which will be full at the end of 2025. I do like looking back on the same day -- sort of a way to chart "growth." This go round, I'm using Leuchtturm1917 Some lines a day: the 5 year memory book.
I’m going to send you an email with all my healing resources from when a fractured tib/fib & ankle ended me up with a permanent metal rod & having to learn to walk again in 2017! I came back stronger than before, more in tune with my body & mind and so grateful for my health. You got this 💪🏼 ❤️🩹 ❤️💋
7th broken foot, sprained wrist as I fell down the deck stairs at the exact moment Trump was shot. Weird coincidence as I didn’t find out until I crawled back into the house to reach my phone.
I love my one-line-a-day diary - I also am on my second one. So fascinating to see the things that change -- and the things that don't! -- year after year. Wish I'd been doing this my whole life. I also do more extensive journaling which is more about processing, but I shred those journals every couple years. The one-line-a-day offers the perfect amount of record-keeping without all the embarrassing details and drama of my daily journal.
My heart goes out to you. The way such an injury clears your schedule and limits you r activities is as bad as the physical discomfort. You are fully entitled to our sympathy.
I sustained my first fracture a few years ago, a broken ankle suffered in a fall on the ice. The only upside of the injury is that when I was able to venture out in public on crutches, I was astonished by the kindness of strangers. They held doors for me and waved me to the front of the checkout. Crowds parted like the Red Sea so I could pass through. People were so thoughtful that I was tempted to keep the crutches as props once I had mended.
I hope you can avoid additional injury, illness, or other misadventure that could complicate your recovery. Get well soon!
Just wait until you discover “recovery shoes.” In all seriousness, hope your respite goes better than expected and thank you for keeping us posted. Sending lots of writing fairy dust!
Oh Susan, so sorry about the ankle. That is a real drag. I hope it heals fully and quickly. I once broke my leg and sprained my ankle while on a rock climbing trip, but I was literally walking between climbs when it happened which also felt ridiculous. I hope your forced rest leads to some productive writing. Take care.
So sorry about your ankle. I am just coming out of 7 weeks of less seriously- tiny lower tip of the fibula- not weight bearing broken ankle-ness. My recommendation is sleep as much as you can now. Be bored. Give up on that great harvest or get your friends to pick what they can. Let your mind slow down to bone knitting pace. Praise your tendons + ligaments with frequent massaging. Get some linament to rub in. It smells soothing and really does help with all the swelling. Get that catalog shopping done for the holidays....
Want to borrow the easy to use crutches I got in France? The beverage cart injured me on the flight there. I tested out the French health care system, where, for about 300€ I got three doctor visits, pain meds, an orthopedic boot, fancy crutches, and a copy of a 6-view X-ray, which I brought home and framed.

I got one from my doctor: it’s a lifesaver!

Sorry about your twist, dear! It's happened to me. It's a rite of passage.

Not a whine at all. I appreciated your careful consideration of shorts options.
First Dorie Greenspan, now you. My Substacker idols are having a rough summer.
