You in your cowboy splendor -- made me smile. Love this!

I kind of feel sorry for people who never experienced the mimeograph machine, the purple letters and that smell. Divine. I like a whiff of Clorox. At bath and body works, I stock up on clean linen smells. Jo Malone has some great products, too.

The smells of marker and mimeograph! I can smell them in my mind’s eye along with silly putty! :)

Nail polish will not stay on my nails for long without chipping. I'm with you on the no-chip manicure. I had two and it about destroyed my nails. Have you ever tried nail wraps? They are super easy to apply at home, pretty inexpensive, and come in tons of colors and patterns. And, they don't jack up your nails.

AS a lady architect I too have fallen victim to the idea that I might need a suit and have purchased several only to eventually realize that that ISNT A THING, at least not in my life . But I still get entranced by the idea sometimes . Maybe if I was in NYC….. like in a movie 🤪

I was thinking of you as I wrote that!! I’m not kidding! And yes, there was a movie version of myself that wore smart suits and kitten heels as everyday wear and strangely enough it never materialized. Thank goodness (I think). Xx

Loved this, as usual. My nails are hopeless, crack and tear so easily; I worried it meant a health condition but my aunt told me it's a family thing -- none of us have good nails. In my 20s, I stopped even trying to use makeup; my skin's too sensitive, and then I realized how much time and money I was saving without it.

I just finished an excellent contemporary fiction book that goes by the name of “The Idiot.” If you like ivy league, scholarly idiotic arguments, incredibly intelligent idiots, and Budapest, then you’ll love it!

That Pat Barker trilogy is so remarkable; the third book is one of only a few books ever in my life that made me cry (Black Beauty was the first; the ending of Shirley Hazzard's Transit of Venus -- MY GOD THAT WOMAN'S SENTENCES ARE IMPECCABLE- was another). Go Barker! But also, Winesburg is so weird and shimmery. . . But also: have you gone back to Cather and/or Wharton? The Professor's House is a humdinger.

What a wonderful break from the scary and depressing political stuff I’m addicted to reading, You wrote that wonderful book about the LA library fire, no??? It was unforgettable. Do you have a favorite book list somewhere? Thx PS I’ve only had two manicures in my 76 years and no eyelash extenders, but I wear eyeliner almost every day.

I don’t have a single list of favorite books; that might be interesting to put together! And yes, I wrote The Library Book :)

How delightful! I grew up wearing pinafores with pockets filled with earthworms I dug up and called “little tykes” and replanted in our yard—all while wearing ribbons in my hair. I graduated to picking up frogs even though the other kids said “you’ll get warts!” and took them home to live in my room until Mom put a stop to that! Today I am a commercial grower who loves good dirt, earthworms, a healthy environment and all wildlife AND I get my nails done monthly! Enjoy those eyelash extensions, Girlfriend….blink blink!

A book that might be up your alley: 'Doc,' by Mary Doria Russell. A fictionalized account of (a good chunk of) Doc Holliday's life, especially his relationships with Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, et al. I don't read much historical fiction but this was something special.

I’ve got summer colors and I’ve got winter colors. My summer colors flatter a tanned face. My winter colors are those that make the color of my skin healthy. Giving myself constraints has bestowed me with freedom. Just white things are allowed to live on my kitchen counter top. And so on !

That was me, I had all the cowboy stuff, I supplied the whole neighborhood with stick horses and toy guns in 1960. It all sounds like my trajectory, loved reading this.
