The Christian W. dress is lovely, and I am sure you will be able to wear it for different events, but the Issey Miyake dress is not only fantastic, it also communicates “occasion.”
In my early New York City days you could smoke at your desk at work, you could smoke in movie theaters! I was smoking Marlboro Reds, which I’ve since been told are the hardest brand to quit, and I believe it because they smell and taste the best. I quit 35 years ago and don’t mind at all being near a smoker ‘cause I still miss it. Also—I love How To With John Wilson! 🌹 and the dress.
I can't speak to the current smells of Buffalo, but I grew up in Syracuse, with family near Toronto, so we passed by Buffalo many a time back in the 60's and 70's--and jeezum did Buffalo have a distinctive (let's call it) odor back then. It was nothing as pleasant as bacon or Cheerios.
Hats off to you Ms. Orlean---you have such a magical way of pulling so much inspiration together under one tarpaulin of a brief article. Each of your works is a veiled sermonette that can bring one back to one's sense of what a miracle it is to get to enjoy a human lifetime in much the same way that Louise Erdrich does with "Fleur" or William Faulkner does with "The Fire in the Hearth" or all storytellers with their true bona fides do. . . I watched "Little Wing" from your tip and was reborn into the fact of how lucky we writers are. I mean like---really fuckin lucky. Thanks a million.
Vegas is another culture, that's for sure but so too is the whole world of slots and gambling and yes, about the only place one can smoke indoors these days. Thank goodness.
Congrats on the Gracie and both of those dresses are WOWS -- but I gotta say the Miyake looks like it was made just for you! And so sad on Carla Hayden...she's one of a kind, always has been. I first met Carla when she was working at Enoch Pratt library in Baltimore -- what a wonderful place that is on a Sunday afternoon in winter...lots of programming, families with kids and kids with other kids and people on dates...it's the best of what a community center in a city can offer and to think it's a library fostering all of that. Trump. Trump. Trump -- god help us all.
You had me until the dress. Absolutely breathtaking, but QUITE out of reach. "Wordy Bird" is so everygal, and I get so much writing inspiration from it, that I forget you're a BIG DEAL.
It’s the Cheerios! Or the Lucky Charms. The General Mills factory is right on the Buffalo River (quite a sight and smell when you’re kayaking it). So sorry to miss you in my adopted hometown — cheers!

I adored "Little Wing" and now must re-read it, pronto. And there's a film! Wonderful news.
What you’re likely smelling is Cheerios. There is a General Mills plant not far from downtown. Definitely our signature scent!
🤣
I love your dress! Gracie:)))) awsome!

What a huge compliment! Thank you!
Love the Miyake dress much better than the first one you showed!
I also despise the smell of weed. I would rather smell cigarette smoke any day!
Your female"friends" must have stared with envy.

Oh Susan, I am *so* with you on the LoC firing...and I'll stop there.
But this post's title? SO many ways that a reader's mind might wander astray! 🤣 I'm just very, very glad mine got brought back to upstate NY.
LOVE the Issay Miyake dress. Yes. Wear it again!!
Love both dresses... Thanks for smell musings. Such an important sense
